What are the judges looking for?

First half

The First Half of the competition will be for Novice & Intermediate level dancers. The scoring will consist of the following:

  • Technique (Turns, Leaps, Placement, Control Strength) 40 Points

  • Performance / Showmanship (Energy, Personality, Eye Contact, Poise) 30 Points

  • Costume / Appearance (Style, Originality, Creativity, Neatness) 10 Points

  • Choreography / Staging (Variety, Transitions, Creativity, Originality) 10 Points

  • Overall Impression 10 Points

Novice & Intermediate

High Gold    267-282.9

High Silver   250.9 & Under

Second half

The second half of the competition will be for Advanced and Elite level dancers. The scoring will consist of the following:

  • Costume / Appearance (Style, Originality, Creativity, Neatness) 10 Points

Levels Challenge

Spirit Dance Competition will have four competitive levels for dancers. Dancers’ placement in each level is to be determined at the teacher’s discretion.

Novice
This level has been created for our beginning competitive dancers. These performers have little or no experience in the competition scene, and are in the beginning stages of learning to dance.
Intermediate
This level is designed for intermediate on the rise dancers who have some competition experience.
Advance
This level is for adults and/or advance dancers with more than 2 years of competition experience. Judges have the right to move dancers up a level at their discretion if they think they are misplaced. This right will only be used at the judge’s careful discretion.
Elite
This level is for dancers that are top in their class and have more than 5 years of competition experience.

Age Division

  • Petite: 5 & Under 
  • Mini: 6-8 (average age)
  • Junior: 9-11 (average age)
  • Teen: 12-14 (average age)
  • Senior: 15-19 (average age)
  • Adult: 20 & Older

Deadlines

Registration & payment should be completed 30 days before the competition day.

Song and theme Selection

Choreography, costuming & lyrics should not be offensive or inappropriate.

Timings and Scheduling

Solo:                 2.45 Minutes

Duet/Trio:          2.45 Minutes

Small Group:     3.00 Minutes

Large Group:     3.00 Minutes

Production:        6.00-8.00 Minutes

Extended time:  $3 charge per dancer

If the time limit is exceeded 10 points per minute will be deducted from the competitive team final score.

Props
Removable props are welcome (chairs, tables, banners, etc.) we urge all studio owners, teachers, and especially parents to keep performances thematically and choreographically appropriate. Only 2 minutes are allowed for stage preparation (includes general introductions) before performance, and only 1 minute allowed after performance to clean the stage. Props and Lighting a. No special effects: steam, disco balls, smoke, etc. are allowed. b. Props hanging from the ceiling will not be allowed. c. Each team should have a representative overseeing.

Dressing Room and Backstage Rules
Participants should be present at the theater 2-hours prior to the event for Registration and backstage at least 2 acts in advance. “No shows” will forfeit their chance to participate. the order of participation can NOT be changed An assistant stage coordinator will be backstage for the directors to sign in upon Arrival. If a team has not signed in they will forfeit their chance to participate. Safety Code: No glass, paint, confetti, grains, or any other small/breakable objects allowed on stage or in dressing rooms. This safety code will be strictly enforced. Please advise your students to enter and exit the auditorium quietly between routines only. No food allowed inside the theater or backstage.
Trophies and Awards
Each dancer will receive a pin with their classification (High Silver, Gold, High Gold, Platinum & Diamond) Each Soloist and group dancers will receive a trophy Soloists that score 1st place in category will receive a medal Groups that score 1st place in category will receive a Plaque Soloist & Groups will receive a plaque for the top five over all There will be one Grand trophy in each half of the competition for the highest scoring large group or production. (1 winner for Novice & Intermediate) & (1 winner for Advance & Elite)
